Landscape

My landscapes tend to depict the intricate patterns of the waves within a water bodies, silhouettes of earthen profiles, or soft dubious forms of vapor in sky.

Figurative

These paintings rely on my focus to render an object as it relates to its environment. The image contains acute detail of light, surface texture, dimensional form.

Color Fields

These paintings explore color experience using layers of color and scaled patterning. Hexagonal, square, triangular and even linear modes shape the qualities of these color fields. The aim is to invoke a positive transcendental experience for the viewer. There are a wide range of styles in this group as I have explored this concept throughout most of my adult life.

Meta

I am interested in the idea that genius is not an object that one might possess, rather it is an entity that is alloyed to take possession of an object or figure. Often, in this vein of work, each painting will be made up of a sequence of layers that build off of the information that is left by the earlier layers. An outline or plan for a composition is not laid out beforehand as to leave room for the painting and the act of painting to become a vessel for a spirit, genius or a metaphysical entity.

Sabatical

During the 2019-2020 school year my family and I decided to put our things in storage, put our home up for rent and live in Latin America. We had chosen Oaxaca, Mexico and Cuzco, Peru. I had designated one of our large suitcases for art supplies, and luckily our kids were smaller then and we only needed one other large suitcase! I was able to buy additional materials in both locations and set up space to have a daily painting practice. We had time to experience local art and culture. I was inspired by the stark contrast in lifestyle. The air felt different, the land and light had a different color, and the language and culture exposed a a fresh perspective. During this period I was careful to paint what felt relevant to me at the time.
